Tazé Meze Mangal Restaurant Review

Taze Restaurant

Tazé Meze Mangal in Chatham is a Turkish restaurant and takeaway serving a menu of classic dishes ranging from kebabs, meze, stews, and grilled meats.

It was one of those ‘what’s for lunch moments’, and after strolling by a local (Chatham) Turkish supermarket selling all kinds of wonderful peppers and Eastern style ingredients, it made us yearn for an ‘authentic’ Turkish meal.

We literally stumbled across the restaurant that’s nestled on a small side street just off the main High Street, home to a selection of Middle Eastern grocery stores and cafes. Taze is easily identifiable by its large red awning and outdoor seating.

Having visited the restaurant frequently over the past 2 years, we can wholeheartedly say that this is the real deal when it comes to Turkish cuisine.  These guys absolutely know what they are doing and dish up some truly flavourful dishes.

The Perfect Home-Baked BreadThe traditional
The traditional wood-fired oven bakes fabulous home-baked pita, the most deliciously flavoursome lahmacun, and pizza.  You’ll also be treated to succulently grilled-to-order, juicy and by far some of the juiciest lamb, and chicken kebabs you are likely to eat in the area, as well as lamb chops to die for, and spicy kofte too.

The team at Taze have also created a selection of fabulous vegetarian dishes, including Mousaka and Falafel as well as Imam Bayildi Soslu (stuffed aubergine) and a vegetarian grill, all served with rice.

Appetising appetisers

The mixed meze appetiser is ideal for those who like to sample a little of everything. Saksuka, a personal favourite, is creamy and flavourful (we usually need to order extra it’s that good!!!), and of course that old favourite, Hummus, is always on the menu, and the perfect accompaniment to most dishes.

Refreshing signature salad
Another thing that stands out for me is the salad… yes, it’s often overlooked but here at Taze it’s beautifully presented, and the addition of red cabbage and delicate light dressing makes it highly refreshing and appetising.

The main course

A true favourite of ours is the sharing platter or set menu which they’ll create for 2 to 6 people. Here you’ll get a huge helping of mixed meze, a mound of mixed kebabs, fresh and tasty salad, rice and freshly baked bread – if you’ve a big appetite and like to sample a selection of kebab meats, all of which are so tender and delicious – then this one is for you.  As you bite into the perfectly grilled lamb the juices just flood out… mmm, my mouth is watering at the very thought!  Chicken is always cooked to perfection and seasoned with just the right amount of spices to make the taste buds sing!

Delightful daily dish
Those locals in the know will drop by at lunchtime to enjoy the Daily Stew special (Sulu Yemekler), either a vegetarian or meat stew served with rice, salad, fresh-baked bread and fresh tzatziki.  We have eaten this special on many occasions and it never disappoints, keeps you going until dinner time too!

Friendly, low-key & relaxed atmosphere
In our experience, the entire Tazé staff are friendly and courteous, and to our surprise, even when we haven’t visited for months on end, they will remember us and greet us with enthusiasm and sincerity as soon as we walk through the door!

Décor is simple yet they have their own individual style at Tazé, and the casual vibe makes it the ideal place for lunch, or a low-key evening meal whether you’re dining alone, or it’s a family treat!  There’s no dress code here, just delicious and authentic middle-eastern food served by friendly people… and always with a smile!

So, next time you’re in the neighbourhood, or even if you’re not, stop by Taze to enjoy some truly authentic Turkish cuisine, friendly service and a real treat for the taste-buds.  And during the warmer months enjoy dining alfresco and watch the local’s going about their daily life.

A final word of warning!
Just remember that though the bread is absolutely fantastic since it freshly baked on the premises, try to hold back on eating too much with your Meze, otherwise you’ll have trouble getting through the main course! Their portions are large, so be warned!
