No matter what day of the week it is when you visit Edge Restaurant in Bournemouth you are guaranteed the very best of everything. From the beautifully designed dining room, exquisite furnishings and spectacular view there’s nothing that’s been missed here. Right down to the smallest detail everything is perfectly arranged, elegantly styled and when you add to this the superb cuisine created seven days a week by Chef Tom Scoble, I defy you not to want to return on a regular basis to sample everything on the menu.
Having never sampled the Edge Sunday Lunch menu we could resist no longer so made an advanced reservation a couple of weeks ago since we’d heard the restaurant enjoys a very healthy clientele on a Sunday. We are greeted by professional and friendly staff upon arrival at this 4th-floor eatery set on the cliff tops at Alum Chine with glorious views of Bournemouth’s sandy coastline surrounding us.
After being seated we are immediately provided with a menu and offered a drink from the bar. The Sunday lunch menu suits all types of diners so whether your preference is vegetarian or something from the sea, you’ll be well taken care of here. And for all you carnivores there are several meaty dishes that include: the roast of the day, roast rib of Hampshire beef, or whole roasted poussin (the menu does vary but this was today’s offering).
Edge Sunday Roast
A selection of the freshest crusty bread is served prior to our starters arriving of which we chose: Caesar salad – crisp and crunchy it’s coated with just the right amount of dressing, flavourful anchovies and scrumptious parmesan cheese. Excellent and definitely something I’d return for. My partner opts for the highly colourful and extremely appetising pea & parmesan risotto. A light and creamy dish with fresh pea shoots and tasty parmesan – great for those vegetarians amongst you but perfect for anyone’s palette! Most enjoyable!
I’m now wondering how I’ll manage to eat the Roasted Sirloin of Beef that I’ve ordered for my main course but somehow I ingest every last morsel of it!
Traditional Sunday Roast
As always, the presentation is of the highest level here at Edge. The slices of wonderfully thick beef are tender and juicy, and slightly pink (per my request). Yorkshire puddings are crisp, light and perfect with gravy poured atop. My favourite part of the meal, the Roast Potatoes – YES! Just the way a roast potato should be, crunchy outside, soft and fluffy on the inside and when mashed with a little of the gravy… mmm, it’s drooling perfection. Also included in the vegetable selection is the most divine tasting red cabbage – sweet and tender; an amazing cauliflower cheese of which the vegetables are still crunchy – a rare thing, as most restaurants overcook this vegetable in my opinion; and finally parsnips finish off the taste-buds with their delectable sweetness and tenderness! Oops, and before I forget, the horseradish is creamy and tasty, but slightly lacking the ‘kick’ we so enjoy.
A little breather whilst we decide upon a delectable dessert, all of which make the mouth water so it’s not easy to make a quick decision. We select the chocolate brownie which I have to admit is one of the best have eaten. Soft and moist in texture, the sprinkling of honeycomb crumbs and naughty chocolate sauce makes it a totally over-the-top indulgence that everyone should enjoy at least once!
So, true to form, Edge did not disappoint and I can see why their Sunday lunch has become such a great success. I can’t think of anything negative to say about this wonderful restaurant by the sea. I love it here and highly recommend a visit any time of the week, whether it’s for lunch or dinner you’ll enjoy not only the fabulous food but also the wonderful atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. I do however suggest that you call in advance to make your reservation, for this is not one to miss!
