Great location, how’s the food?
Jasin's Restaurant
Having been recommended to us by a friend, we decide one sunny morning to drive down to coastal Deal to sample what we hope to be a scrumptious English breakfast at Jasin’s Restaurant which sits at the end of Deal Pier.

It’s a great location and the walk along the pier in the sunshine adds to the experience as we watch children play and observe local fishermen (and women) casting out their fishing rods in hopes of catching something fresh for tonight’s dinner!

A good sign (as we arrive) is a bustling and vibrant restaurant filled with families, couples, and in the words of Bridget Jones, ‘Singletons’ too!  Many eating, some ordering and other waiting to be served.  We find a table for two immediately and then it’s a short wait until a waitress arrives with a menu.

British breakfast favourites

It’s an all-day breakfast menu, served from 8:00am to 5pm, and yes, as you might have guessed the menu is filled with all the British favourites, i.e. Full English (varying sizes), Eggs Benedict, Eggs Royale, and various on toast items for those looking for something on the lighter side!

We order one medium all day breakfast, that’s 2 bacon, 2 sausage, 2 eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, baked beans, hash brown and toast, and one small (that’s one of each of the above), and two flat whites (coffee to the uninitiated)!

Not too long before the coffee arrives and have to say it’s good. Strong, hot and served with a little treat (biscuit)…. Which is a good job since 34 minutes later and we’re still waiting for our food… 1 hour and 5 minutes after we first arrive and finally our breakfast arrives!

Nothing inspiring here
As you can imagine, I’m already a little more than frustrated, and not feeling so positive about Jasin’s breakfast effort!  It’s mediocre at best. Yes it’s hot, and yes the egg is runny (a must in our house) but fatty bacon adorns the plate, accompanied by non-descript sausages, morose mushrooms, lukewarm baked beans – everything is flavourless, and certainly not what we expected… and add salt to injury – the salt pot is empty!

Local opinion
A little later while my partner is getting a haircut he is chatting with the barber who explains to him that not that many locals (the ones in the know) will eat there. The waiting time is well-known and the food is mediocre at best.

How about making an effort
I like to think that when you have an eatery in great location then you’ll make that extra special effort to provide your customers with something truly memorable that tantalises the tastebuds – well, this may be a memorable experience, but sadly not in a positive way.   OK, the food fills an empty stomach, and it’s a good sized portion but definitely would not recommend Jasin’s to anyone who really enjoys good tasting food.

Sadly, this is not uncommon for a restaurant in a great location to serve up much less that good food. It’s a matter of “if they come then no point changing the menu or the ingredients.” If Jasin’s Restaurant Cafe switched up their management, sourced good local ingredients – then they would have a serious hit on their hands. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

The best part of the experience was the walk along the pier!
